About the Mission Fund

If, mission is ‘finding out what God is doing and joining in’ then it must surely be one of the most exciting aspects of our Christian calling and part of the lifeblood of the church.

Through the generosity of the national church Durham Diocese has received many thousands of pounds over recent years in the form of a Mission Fund Grant. From 2011-13 Durham Diocese’s Mission Fund Grant will be £200,000per annum. A carry forward of £60,000 supplements this fund releasing a grand total of £660,000 for use in promoting and encouraging Mission over the next three years.

The Bishop’s Council has decided to use this in three ways:

Firstly we want to give local churches money! We have set aside £30,000 per annum for easily accessible Mission Micro Grants (MMGs). Mission Micro Grants of up to £500pa will be awarded to support new mission activities in the local church. We hope that these grants will encourage innovation, risk taking and a ‘can do’ attitude in our congregations

Secondly, each Archdeaconry is being offered £30,000 per annum for use in supporting larger projects in the Archdeaconries. Archdeaconry Mission Fund groups are being created to administer these grants. Those interested in applying for these grants should be in touch with their Archdeacon.

Thirdly, £100,000 per annum is being used by the Bishop’s Council to support some wider partnership ministries across the whole diocese.

As with any grant application there are various criteria that apply to the grants. Before applying you should be clear how your application relates to the Anglican Five Marks of Mission and the Diocese’s Priority for growth.

  • To proclaim the good news of the Kingdom
  • To teach, baptise and nurture new believers
  • To respond to human need by loving service
  • To seek to transform unjust structures of society
  • To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and to sustain the life of the earth
