Clergy Continuing Ministerial Development

Introduction
The primary aim of Continuing Ministerial Development is to engender a culture of lifelong learning among the clergy. The Director of Ministry administers the CMD budget, and arranges a CMD programme of opportunities for day or residential learning for clergy.

CMD REVIEW
Between October 2009 and March 2010 a review of CMD was conducted by a group set up by the Council for Ministry.  The report, called Ministerial Flourishing, has been well received by Bishop's Council.  Click here for a pdf of the report.

CMD GRANTS

  1. Basic Clergy Development Grants. These are available to help clergy undertake a specific course, event, retreat or development project. There is a form for this and a presumption that an application would be successful. The basic grant is set at £200 per year. It is not possible to carry funds forward from year to year.  Curates are eligible for Basic Grants subject to the clear written support of their Training Incumbent and the Director of IME 4-7.  Click here for a pdf of the grant application form.
  2. Special Clergy Development Grants.  Click here for advice on applying for a Special Grant.

Further Degrees
Clergy are encouraged to consider whether at some stage during their ordained ministry an accredited course of study might be appropriate. The diocese considers that a necessary step in this process is a serious conversation with the Director of Ministerial Development and Parish Support. Clergy who enrol for further degrees may apply for a bursary to support their studies which will be considered by the Grants Panel.

Sabbaticals
As part of the CMD provision the diocese offers a limited number of sabbaticals for clergy each year.  Nominated candidates should meet with the Director of Ministerial Development and Parish Support to prepare a ‘Sabbatical Proposal Document’.
