Criteria for all Mission Grants

Specific Criteria for applications (2011-13)

Note

  • a significant number of one-off small grants (up to £500) are available through the Mission Micro Grant scheme. Larger sums are available through the Archdeaconry Mission Grant Scheme.
  • larger grants (some of which may extend beyond a year) may be available through the Archdeaconry Mission Grant Scheme.
  • Mission Fund grants are to be viewed primarily as ‘seed’ funding for initiatives which, if they continue, should be encouraged to identify and develop other funding streams. Recipients should not count on continuation funding.

All criteria apply to Archdeaconry Mission Grants
Criteria 1,2, 9 & 10 apply Mission Micro Grants

  1. All proposed mission initiatives must operate within the Diocese of Durham, under the oversight of the Bishop. This oversight may be shared with the relevant authority of sister churches and other charitable organisations by negotiation.

  2. All proposed mission activity seeking support will usually be new work for the parish, locality or Deanery (or exceptionally for the extension of an established project already supported by the Mission Fund: eg when matched funding has a longer time scale).

  3. The initiatives must not replicate work already being undertaken in the community or communities in which the proposed activity is to take place

  4. All proposed projects must be able to demonstrate some financial commitment on the part of the churches or Christian organisation concerned; initiatives cannot expect be wholly funded by a grant from the Mission Fund.

  5. Area, Locality or Deanery initiatives are encouraged and should come with the support of the Deanery Synod (or appropriate sub-group).

  6. Applications may include a bid for salary/stipend costs for mission personnel, but not for housing.

  7. While applications may include an element for administration costs, Mission Fund Grants may not be used to employ an administrator.

  8. Grants from the Mission Fund are not available for building projects - new build, renovation or repair - but may be used where appropriate towards rental costs.

  9. So as to contribute fully to ‘Diocesan learning’ on the development of mission initiatives, all projects that receive grants will be required to make a report on the use of their funds and outcomes achieved: Mission Micro Grant recipients will report to the Local Church Growth and Development Adviser. Archdeaconry Grant recipients will report to their Archdeaconry groups. Reports will be collated by the MFAG. All grant recipients will be required to submit accounts.

  10. Unless agreed otherwise in advance all projects must come ‘on stream’ within one year of the final grant approval or the monies will revert to the Mission Fund for re-allocation.
