Wings for Worship

Wings for Worship - Developing Lay Confidence

The excellent Wings for Worship workshops consist of the following workshops:

Five Workshops

Preparing for take-off - practicalities of leading parts of a service

  • A down-to-earth workshop: preparing what to say; speaking in public; using multiple voices.
  • Hints, tips and practical application for Readings; Intercessions; Notices.

Getting airborne – the opportunities offered by Common Worship

  • Setting the scene: who is the God we worship? what is worship anyway? the importance of lay worship leaders.
  • How does Common Worship work? a guide to shape and content.
  • Worship that transforms – the potential for a fulfilling Service of the Word.

Being the Co-Pilot - assisting in the running of a whole service

  • The 'sacrist' and 'server' roles, such as preparing the church, serving, distributing communion.
  • Assisting in leadership of a Sunday Eucharist / Holy Communion service.

Flying solo - leading an entire act of worship

  • Leading a regular Sunday or weekday service without clergy or Reader present.
  • Hints and tips for finding your way round the calendar, lectionary and collects.

Breaking the sound barrier - ways of handling 'the Word'

  • What if there is no preacher?
  • Imaginative alternatives to formal preaching.

You are invited to attend any workshop which you feel will be helpful.
The workshops are free, but you do need to book.
Groups from the same church are welcome.
Participants need the support of their incumbent. This is because you will only be able to develop the skills acquired at the workshop by practical experience.
We look forward to seeing you!
Wings for Worship is a collaborative venture of the Diocesan Liturgical Committee and the Diocesan Resource Team.

Please telephone 0191 3746004 or email wings@durham.anglican.org if you would like some more information.

Please be in touch if:

  • you would like to host a whole cycle of workshops or to have one in your parish or deanery.
  • you have suggestions for other topics for the ‘core’ cycle or for extension units.

It is hoped that PCCs will welcome this initiative and take full advantage of it.  Our hope is to involve as many people as possible over the coming years.
